Choosing the right fishing rod is necessary for an angler. If you are an angler who didn’t choose a fishing rod before then we are going to tell you how to choose a fishing rod.
There are different types of fishing rods with different materials. You would need to know what type of fish you are going to chase and which fishing rod is suitable for your tasks. Thus, there are lots of things you need to know and consider to choose your ideal fishing rod and we are going to inform you about them.
We have enlisted a few major types of fishing rods along with where and how they work. You would also learn about the type of fishing tasks they are suitable for.

Spinning rods are the most common fishing rods. This type of fishing rods has a spinning reel fitted underneath the rod which makes them suitable for lure casting and bait casting type fishing tasks. These rods can be used for fishing small to medium-sized fishes.

Baitcasting rods are also similar to crankbait rods. However, baitcasting rods are not so easy to use as they are prone to tangling on the spool if you do not handle them properly. If you are an experienced angler then baitcasting rods would provide you more accuracy and control while fishing.

Surf rods are the longest fishing rods so they can be used for off rock fishing. These 4-5 meter long rods are used for fishing on the distanced breaking waves. Surf rods can be used for catching big fishes as they use big eggbeater reels.

Telescopic rods are also similar to spinning rods as they use spinning reels. This type of rods can be used for catching small to medium-sized fishes in any place. Telescopic rods are getting popular as they are designed to fit in any place, unlike other fishing rods.

Overhead rods are used for catching big and deep-sea fishes. It is a classic boat fishing rod that uses an overhead reel for catching massive fishes. There is no need for casting if you are using an overhead fishing rod.

Fly rods are named after fly fishing with the use of fly reels. This is a stealth fishing strategy that suits fishing in mountain waters and freshwater leaks perfectly. You must have the patience and skills to use a fly rod for this type of fishing.

Things You Should Know Before Choosing A Fishing Rod

Here are some must-know things for anglers to choose the ideal fishing rod.

Varying on your fishing type, you can use fishing rods between 4-14 feet. If you are planning about fishing on walking lures then you must use an 8+ feet fishing rod. You can comfortably use 4-7 feet rods if you don’t need to cast so far. However, 7 feet is the all-rounder weight for a beginner’s fishing rod.

Fishing rods are made of fiberglass, graphite, and composite materials. You need to know which is suitable for you before choosing any rod.

Fiberglass rods are the most strong and low priced fishing rods. You can use them as a beginner since they are highly durable. Fiberglass rods are heavy and you won’t be able to detect small bites which can be a great turn off while fishing.

Graphite rods are very much comfortable for handling and casting as they are light weighted. Graphite rods are also more sensitive to bites which makes them more reliable. Graphite rods are highly expensive and sometimes, they can be too brittle.

Composite rods are a mixture of both graphite and fiberglass rods. These types of rods are very much reliable for heavy use and you would still get enough comfort and enjoyment from using them. Composite rods are the most expensive rods in the market.

The action plays a key role in fishing. Fishing rod action defines how much the rod will bend at a time while battling fishes. Here are the three action types:
Slow Action
Slow action fishing rods are mostly used for small fishes. Slow action fishing rods can be bend from head to the butt. Slow actions work well with small hooks.
Fast Action
Fast actions only bend on the top edge. Fast actions make your fishing rod more sturdy to catch big fishes comfortably. Fast actions work well with single hooks.
Medium Action
Medium actions fishing rods can be used for almost all types of fishings. These fishing rods bend as much as needed. Medium actions can be used with multiple hooks.

The power of your fishing rod describes how much pressure it can bear. Starting from ultra-light to ultra-heavy, rods have different weight limits. You need to know which type of fish you are going to chase and select a rod with enough power for them.

Fishing rod handles come in two shapes. Trigger stick and pistol grip shapes. Trigger stick shape allows you to hold the rod with both hands for battling larger fishes. Pistol grips are for comfortable one-handed fishing. Pistol grip handles are suitable for fishing smaller fishes.
Fishing rod handles are made of two different materials cork and EVA foam. We would suggest you choose handles made of cork material as they are more comfortable and reliable. Cork handles would also warm your hands in cold weather.

Every 7 feet fishing rod has around 6-7 rod guides. These rod guides are mostly made of metal with ceramic coating which increases their fraction. You should avoid crude metal guides.

Conclusion:

Knowing how to choose a fishing rod is of great advantage for professional and beginner anglers. No matter how premium materials your fishing rod has if you do not select them wisely depending on your fishing style, then it would be of no use.
